Chile is a country located in the southwestern end of South America. Its official name is Republic of Chile and its capital is the city of “Santiago de Chile”.
Chile is formed by a long and narrow strip of earth known as Chile continental, between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordillera de los Andes, that extends between the 17º29′57′S and the 56º32′S of latitude (Islas Diego Ramírez), limiting to the north with Peru, to the east with Bolivia and Argentina, and to the south with Paso Drake. In addition , it possesses insular territories, like the Archipelago Juan Fernández, Sala and Gómez, Islas Desventuradas and Isla de Pascua (located in Polynesia), totalizing a surface of 755.838,7 km².

The Republic of Chile is a democratic unitary State, of presidentialist character, conformed by diverse independent institutions that are inserted in a constitutional scheme that determines certain functions and distributes the competitions between the organs of the State, different from the traditional doctrine of the separation of powers. The country is governed by the Political Constitution of the Republic of Chile, approved the 11 of September of 1980, that was enforced the 11 of March of 1981 and that has been reformed in nine opportunities, being one of the most important the reform promulgated the 26th of August of 2005, reform that changed some formal aspects of the democracy, but not the fundamental bases of the State and the Chilean nation.
REGISTRY SYSTEM OF PEOPLE
1.- Specialized organism:
The Service of Civil Registry and Identification is the national organism that has for assignment to offer the service of registry, the certification and verification of the vital facts and vital acts regarding the civil status, identity, goods and other specific acts entrusted by law, protecting the confidentiality, trustworthiness and certainty of the information of the people.
The Service of Civil Registry and Identification is an organism functionally decentralized, with legal personality and own patrimony, submissive to the President of the Republic by means of the Ministry of Justice, autarkic and decentralized, in charge to guard for the legal constitution of the family.
3.- Organizational chart of the Service of Civil Registry and Identification:
The Superior Direction of the Service is in charge of a National Director, who has his judicial and extrajudicial representation, having to develop all the necessary functions and to take all the pertinent decisions for the good development of the Service. Among others functions, it must formulate general policies; to direct, to organize, to coordinate and to administer the physical and human resources; and to advise and to inform to the Ministry of Justice in the matters of the Service.
The Subdivisions of Operations, Studies and Development, Administration and Finances, and Legal, besides the “Contraloría Interna” and 15 “Direcciones Regionales”, depend on the National Direction.

5.- Identity documents in the Chilean system:
Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Death Certificate and Identity Card.
6.-Name of the Identity Document:
The Certificate of Identity is the name of the identity document. All persons older than 18 years old residents in Chile are forced to have this document valid and in good state it can be claimed in the Civil Registry Service and Identification against the presentation of the RUN number and the updated information of address and telephone. All foreigners older than 18 years old, residents in the country, holders of any type of visa or definitive permanence, are forced to obtain their Identity card for Foreigner within the 30 days following the date of delivery of the certificate of definitive permanence or since the corresponding visa is printed in the respective passport.
