Uruguay is a country situated in southeast South America. Its territory borders Rio Grande del Sur (Brazil) to the north and northeast, the provinces Entre Rios and Corrientes (Argentine) to the west, being separated from these lands by the Uruguay River. To the south of Uruguay lies the estuary of Rio de la Plata River which borders the province of Buenos Aires and the city of Buenos Aires, and has coasts also on the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Uruguay is administrative divided into 19 departments.
The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a democratic unified State featured presidential. It has a consolidated political parties system, and its government consists of three independent powers: Executive power, Legislature power and Judiciary power.

- The Civil Status National Directorate
The Civil Identification National Directorate belongs to the Ministry of Interior and the Civil Status National Directorate depends on the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The Civil Status National Directorate that belongs to the Ministry of Education and Culture is organized with Dependencies throughout the country who delegates the service through Communal Centres.
The Civil Status National Directorate has as a main function the registration of the vital facts and vital acts related to the civil status of individuals during their lifetime.
The Civil Identification National Directorate has as a main function to issue the identity document taking into account the existing documentary and the conservation of the registration books where the filial documents are stored. Likewise, this organism is in charge of issuing the regular Passports throughout the country.

6.- Name of the Identity Document:
Identity Card. The Identity Card is a national document which is mandatory for individuals older than 45 years old, national or foreigner, with permanent residence or having the obligation to obtain said residence permit because of a staying in the country for a longer term than ninety days.
